Alan J. Hankers is an award-winning composer and pianist who sets out to create a unique sound world in each of his musical works. Whether he is writing solo, chamber or large ensemble music, he strives to discover inventive ways to explore the intricacies of that medium. His music has been commissioned by the South Carolina Philharmonic Repertory Orchestra, Atlantic Music Festival Contemporary Music Ensemble, Animus Brass Quintet, and has been performed by artists such as the North Shore Symphony, Calidore String Quartet, Unheard-of//Ensemble, pianist Dmitri Novgorodsky, and many others. In addition to concert music, Alan has written extensively for film and multimedia. Since 2016, he has been an assistant at post-production houses in New York City, where he works on music for television.

As an active pianist, he frequently performs as a soloist and collaborator. Beyond the concert hall, he is the full-time keyboardist in the American progressive rock band, Painted In Exile. Hailed by Prog Magazine for their “virtuoso chops and mastery of countless musical styles”, Painted In Exile released their debut full-length LP, ‘The Ordeal’, in 2016. Since joining the band, Alan has toured with the group multiple times throughout North America.

Alan graduated summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Music in Composition from the State University of New York Fredonia. He studied composition with Karl Boelter, Sean Doyle, Rob Deemer, and piano with Sean Duggan. Alan is currently a graduate student at Stony Brook University, where he studies composition with Perry Goldstein and Matthew Barnson.
